The IVC Chinese program teaches simplified Chinese characters. If you have previously taken Chinese courses at other institutions and are not sure which level you should enroll at IVC, please see the following chart:

To take IVC Chinese 2

Comprehend basic spoken Chinese on topics such as introductions, family and daily activities. Using basic vocabulary, you can introduce yourself and your family and talk about your daily schedule both orally and in writing.

You can recognize 120-150 Chinese characters.

To take IVC Chinese 3

Comprehend basic spoken Chinese describing dining and shopping experiences and favorite activities. Using basic vocabulary, you can describe dining and shopping experiences and discuss your favorite activities, both orally and in writing.

You can recognize 200-250 Chinese characters.

To take IVC Chinese 4

Comprehend spoken Chinese describing travel plans, detailed dining experience and daily life in the community. Using expanded vocabulary and a more complex sentence structure, you can describe your travel plans, a detailed dining experience and daily life in your community, both orally and in writing.

You can recognize 350-400 Chinese characters.
