Various tracks and course offerings for transfer level English:
Writing 1 (4 units)
WR 1 (College Writing 1) is the first semester course in college-level writing.
This course involves:
- Actively reading college-level texts
- Writing essays based on those texts
- Other assignments to support your reading and writing
- Development of academic reading, writing, and critical thinking skills that will help you in other college classes
Class sessions will typically involve:
- Classroom discussion
- Small group work
- In-class writing
- Discussion and review of writing projects with your instructor and peers
Because this is a 4-unit class, you can expect to spend approximately 8 to 12 hours outside of class each week to complete your reading and writing assignments.
Writing 181 or WR 382(0.5 unit)
Look for "Writing Conference" on the Schedule of Classes
Students taking WR 1 can choose to enroll in IVC’s on-campus Writing Center (WR 181): an optional pass/no pass support course that provides access to one-on-one support for your writing from IVC English professors.
WR 382 provides the same benefits as WR 181, but students enrolling in WR 1 + WR 302 + WR 382 are required to enroll in the Writing Center (WR 382).
Students who have taken WR 181 or WR 382 often find their writing improves more quickly because of the additional support this course provides.
WR 181 or WR 382 provide:
- One-on-one assistance on writing assignments from IVC English professors in the on-campus Writing Center
- Access to computers and printers in the Writing Center
- A clean, well-lighted place to work on campus
In order to pass WR 181, you must spend at least 24 hours in the Writing Center over the entire semester. In order to pass WR 382, you must complete 24 hours in the Center and four formal conferences. You can complete your required hours at your own pace any time the Writing Center is open.
