At Irvine Valley College, students are placed on academic hold under the following conditions:
- Academic Hold: A student who has attempted at least 12 semester units at Irvine Valley College and/or Saddleback College is placed on an academic hold when the cumulative grade point average (GPA) is less than 2.0.
- Progress Hold: A student who has enrolled in at least 12 semester units at Irvine Valley College and/or Saddleback College is placed on a progress hold when the percentage of all units for which entries of “W,” “FW,” “I,” and “NP” are recorded reaches or exceeds 50 percent.
Students are subject to DISMISSAL when they reach three consecutively enrolled semesters of having an academic/progress hold in any combination of the two hold types mentioned above at Irvine Valley College and/or Saddleback College.
About Academic Holds
- Being placed on an academic/progress hold is a district-wide process (Irvine Valley and Saddleback Colleges).
- Students placed on an academic/progress hold are notified by email after each fall and spring semester.
- Students on an academic/progress hold in their last three enrolled semesters are subject to dismissal and will be notified of dismissal in such cases.
Since an academic/progress holds involve cumulative coursework, it may take several semesters to improve a an academic/progress hold situation.
First-Time Academic/Progress Hold
- First-time academic/progress hold students will have their registration blocked during Spring 2025.
- Your success at IVC is important to us. To help students return to good standing and achieve academic success, all students identified on a first-time academic/progress hold will need to complete the hold success module experience through Canvas.
- To gain access to the course log into IVC's Canvas, accept, and complete the module
- If you have a first time academic/progress hold from a previous semester, contact our Counseling Center by calling 949-451-5319 or email: ivccounseling@ivc.edu.
- After the Success Module is completed, scheduling a counseling appointment is recommended.
Second-Time Academic/Progress Holds
- Second-time academic/progress holds does not block students from registration.
- Students will receive lower priority for registration in their next effective registration period and continuously until they reach good academic standing.
- Students on academic/progress holds for two consecutive terms may the lose California College Promise Grant (CCPG) Fee Waiver eligibility and also be disqualified from federal financial aid eligibility, Veterans Administration (VA) benefits, the IVC Promise Program, and other financial aid type programs.
- Students are encouraged to schedule a counseling appointment to discuss everything in further detail.
How To Be Removed From Academic/Progress Holds
- Students may not appeal an academic/progress hold.
- To be removed from an academic hold, students must reach a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher.
- To be removed from a progress hold, students must reduce their total of W, No Pass/No Credit, or I grades to lower than 50% of all grades earned.
