At Irvine Valley College, students are subject to a pause request when they reach three consecutively enrolled semesters of academic notices in any combination of the two types:
- Academic Notice: Your cumulative grade point average was below 2.0 for your last three enrolled semesters.
- Progress Notice: Your total of W, No Pass/No Credit, or I grades after your last three enrolled semesters was above 50%.
About Academic Pause
- Blocks students from registration.
- It is a district-wide process, effective at IVC and Saddleback College.
- Students facing academic pause are notified by email after each semester.
- An academic pause warning applies after the fall semester and an academic pause request applies once each year after the spring semester.
- It is effective for the following fall semester. This can impact summer or fall registration, but it is dependent on students registration date and time.
Returning After an Academic Pause
To return after serving an academic pause, typically after a semester, a student must:
- Submit a Readmission/Appeal After Dismissal eForm which includes a student statement and Contract for Academic Success. You will attach items along with any supporting documentation to your request if relevant. EForms available on our website at admissions/forms
- Reapply to the college if absent for two or more semesters- the system will remind you of the hold and you will need to follow the remaining steps
- Call the Counseling Office at 949-451-5319 to set up an appointment with a counselor to review the Restart...Reset etc. process
- Submit a Readmission/Appeal After academic pause eForm and a Contract for Academic Success. You will attach your contract along with any supporting documentation to our readmission eForm available on our website at admissions/forms
Since academic pause regards to cumulative coursework, it may take several semesters to improve academic situation, but it's possible. Students in progress to obtain good academic standing will receive lower priority for registration temporarily until they reach good academic standing.
Appealing an Academic Pause
A student may only appeal academic pause under the following conditions if they:
- Have not attended IVC or Saddleback College for at least one semester
- Have successfully completed his/her most recent semester (received a grade of A,B,C, or Pass in all classes and no W or No Pass in any classes)
- Have documentation to support and extenuating circumstance (illness, accident or other circumstance beyond the student's control)
If a student meets one or more of the conditions above, they must:
- Call the Counseling Office at 949-451-5319 to set up an appointment with a counselor to review the readmission process and complete a Readmission/Appeal After Academic Pause eForm and a Contract for Academic Success. You will attach your contract along with any supporting documentation to our readmission eForm available on our website at admissions/forms
