Public Health Science

Students discuss the role of community engagement in promoting public health and social justice.  They will learn of the multiple determinants of health, including sociological, economic, genetic, behavioral, environmental, and other factors that impact human health and health disparities. Students study the risk factors and modes of transmission for infectious and chronic diseases and how these diseases affect both personal and public health.

Kinesiology

Kinesiology is an integrative discipline that focuses on the various components and processes of human movement related to physical activity and sport, incorporating the areas of human anatomy, physiology, neuroscience, biochemistry, biomechanics, psychology, history and sociology. Students then apply these skills and are introduced to topics related to exercise such as the physiology of the body, nutrition, injury prevention, and health enhancement. The program serves all students, regardless of age, fitness level, or previous experience.

Fitness Professional

The demand for well-trained specialists is expected to increase well into the next decade. This positive industry trend will offer a host of opportunities for certified fitness specialists and other qualified health experts. The Fitness Professional program is unique in its design because it offers students an opportunity to learn in both a conventional classroom setting, and gain practical experience through an internship process. Interns fulfill a 50-hour assignment at the Life Fitness Center, a campus fitness facility.

Adapted Kinesiology Program

Helping student achieve their individual fitness goals are the highest priority for the IVC Adapted Kinesiology Fitness Program. As part of the college's longstanding commitment to serve the entire community and embrace our tradition of rich diversity, Adapted Kinesiology is a key component in the programs of the School of Kinesiology, Health and Athletics and our colleagues in Disability Support Programs for Students (DSPS). Classes have been designed for those with temporary or chronic conditions who cannot attain their fitness goals in conventional ways.

Health & Nutrition Program

The Health and Nutrition program continues to be responsive to dynamic changes in a global learning environment. Primary in these course offerings are classes that address the fundamental challenge of balancing personal health with the personal challenges including academia, careers, social tensions and stress in a world of continuous environmental, medical and nutritional change.
