Chafee Grant

The California Chafee Grant Program provides financial assistance to current and former foster youth to use towards vocational training or a degree program. Students are awarded up to $2,250 each semester. A student's receipt of a Chafee Grant award shall not exceed five years (whether or not consecutive) and is not guaranteed, due to limited funding.

Eligibility requirements for the Chafee Grant Program:

Federal Direct Loans

Borrowing can be costly. We recommend that you consider borrowing only if you have exhausted all other options, and that you make a budget for yourself to keep your debt within manageable limits. Only borrow what you need.

Federal Direct Subsidized and Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans are long-term, low-interest loans from the U.S. Department of Education.

Federal Pell Grant

Federal Pell Grants are intended for undergraduate students with significant financial need who have not already earned a bachelor’s degree. Pell Grant eligibility and award amount is based on several factors, including Student Aid Index (SAI), enrollment status, and other federal eligibility requirements. SAI is calculated using the information students provide on their FAFSA using a federally mandated formula.

Student Success Completion Grant (SSCG)

The Student Success Completion Grant (SSCG) is a supplemental grant that provides additional funding for Cal Grant B or C recipients attending a California Community College full-time (enrolled in 12 or more units for a primary term). Funding for SSCG is limited, particularly during the spring semester. We prioritize awarding this grant to students with the highest unmet need based on their financial aid file.

Federal Work-Study

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) program provides eligible students with the opportunity for part time employment to help pay for education expenses. The program allows for on-campus or community-service employment. Funding for the Federal Work Study program is limited, and eligibility is not a guarantee of employment.
