Geography

Jobs in the 21st century demand workers who understand the complex relationships between people, places, and environments all over the world. Geography helps us understand these relationships by examining patterns of why natural and cultural phenomena happen where they happen.

Students completing degrees in geography help governments make planning decisions, support non-profit organizations combating environmental and humanitarian problems, aid businesses in more effectively serving their customers, and more.

Economics

Economics is the study of how people make choices when faced with scarcity. Students will learn: 1) The economic problem of scarcity and it’s consequences for decision making by individuals, firms, and society, 2) To evaluate resource allocation and changes within markets and the economy using economic modeling, mathematical and graphical analysis, and 3) Government policy solutions to market failure and the effectiveness of such solutions. The knowledge and skills acquired from an economics degree is useful for positions in management, business, governments, and non-profits, among others.

Anthropology

Anthropology is the study of the organization, behavior, and development of the human species. Anthropology focuses on the acquisition of knowledge through use of the scientific method, allowing students to explain evolutionary theory in light of the human fossil record, analyze the relationship between modern humans and non-human primates, and objectively evaluate non-western customs and beliefs.

Administration of Justice

IVC's Administration of Justice program prepares students with the educational knowledge and experience they will need to transfer to a 4-year institution, to achieve a career in law enforcement and/or supervision, and to prepare to take the competitive written and oral examinations given by local, state, and federal agencies. The program provides a sound foundation for students intending to pursue careers in law enforcement, corrections, supervision and administration, probation and parole, private security, and law.

Educational Requirement for Teachers (Title 22)

Child Development

The Child Development program is relevant for individuals pursuing various interests and goals, including early childhood education teachers, child development specialists, and recreation leaders; those interested in professional careers providing services to children and families -- in children's centers, family day-care, recreational programs, special education programs, community agencies, health programs, and child advocacy; and those interested in marketing children's books, toys, magazines, and educational software. Parents and potential parents will also benefit from the program.

About

The Administration of Justice program acquaints pre-service and in-service students with the principles and practices of the criminal justice system in America and prepares students for employment in various agencies. Federal, state and local civil service regulations govern the appointment of criminal justice candidates. Eligibility for appointment depends upon performance in competitive written and oral examinations as well as education and experience.
