MESA Summer Projects Advancing Research & Knowledge (SPARK) is an 8-week summer immersion initiative designed to bridge gaps in STEM education for underrepresented and low-income students. This program offers hands-on, culturally relevant research experiences to develop critical STEM skills and prepare students for high-demand careers. Through project-based learning, technical skill-building, and mentorship, participants will gain valuable experience and confidence to succeed in STEM fields.

  • Week 1: Basic Electronics & Soldering
  • Week 2: Experimental Design & Data Analysis
  • Weeks 3-4: Arduino Microcontrollers & AI with Raspberry Pi
  • Weeks 5-6: Advanced Projects & Mentorship
  • Weeks 7-8: Final Project Presentations & Scientific Poster Design
  • Hands-On Research Projects: Build and refine projects like Arduino-controlled robots, AI models using Raspberry Pi, and weather monitoring systems.
  • Skill Development: Gain experience in electronics, programming, data analysis, and experimental design.
  • Cultural Relevance: Engage in research that resonates with your community and background.
  • Mentorship: Work closely with Professor Sim, who will guide you through each phase of your project.
  • Financial Support: Receive a $5,000 stipend for full participation.

Personal Statement

The MESA SPARK application includes a 500 word personal statement. Please review the prompt below and prepare a response prior to starting your application: 

In 500 words or less, please answer the following questions: 

  • What are your short- and long-term goals?
  • What has motivated you to pursue your goals? (Feel free to share how your personal background and experiences have played a role in selecting these goals).
  • What steps, if any, have you taken towards accomplishing your goals? (Please include any class projects, volunteer activities, and other experiences that you feel have prepared you for success).
  • How do you believe the IVC MESA SPARK Program will help you accomplish your goals? (How does the MESA SPARK Program fit into your goals?)
