Interested in improving your English skills while taking tuition free classes? Enroll in AESL courses! You will acquire the English language skills you need to advance your education or your career. By completing AESL courses, you can also earn an AESL Certificate of Competency.
The AESL (Adult English as a Second Language) Program provides noncredit course work on English and American culture lessons to help students at work and school, with their family, and in society. Course work includes:
AESL students practice their English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in class while learning about English grammar, pronunciation, conversation, and vocabulary. Students also learn about U.S. culture and government, and improve their computer skills by using English learning software in a computer lab one day a week.
There are five levels of core, multi-skills courses from beginning to advanced. Course offerings also include Digital Literacy, U.S. Citizenship, Conversation, Pronunciation, Grammar, and Idioms.
The AESL program offers three certificates of competency. To earn a Certificate of Competency for each level, a student will take a year-long course sequence.
Adult English as a Second Language: Beginning Certificate of Competency Noncredit
This sequence of courses is designed to help non-native English language learners acquire basic communication skills and cultural/civic proficiencies used in everyday life situations encountered at home, at school, at work, and in the community. The program prepares students to participate in simple conversations, read and understand basic directions and texts, fill out basic forms, and write simple sentences. It also prepares students for the intermediate level program.

Adult English as a Second Language: Intermediate Certificate of Competency Noncredit
This sequence of courses is designed to help non-native English language learners strengthen communication skills and cultural/civic proficiencies used in everyday life situations encountered at home, school, at work, and in the community. The program prepares students to engage in conversations on a variety of subjects beyond that of personal experience, read and understand texts from different genres, and write basic paragraphs. It also prepares students for the advanced level program.

Adult English as a Second Language: Advanced Certificate of Competency Noncredit
This sequence of courses is designed to help non-native English language learners refine communication skills and cultural/civic proficiencies used in everyday life situations they will encounter at home, school, at work, and in the community. The program prepares students to develop extended oral fluency, read and understand work-specific and simple academic texts, and write extended paragraphs. It prepares students for ESL academic credit courses and oral and written communication needs in the workplace.

Students who complete AESL classes can transfer to credit ESL, other credit courses, or to another certificate program (e.g. Accounting, Culinary Arts, Clinical/Medical, Dental).
