Resources

Learning a language takes time and commitment but it is a very rewarding and enjoyable process. Whether you take French at IVC and you want to immerse yourself in French outside the class or you just want to learn French on your own, here are a few ideas followed by some useful websites.

French Culture in Southern California

Southern California is home to a large number of French speakers. In recent years, the number of French speakers from France and Francophone countries who have made California their home has increased. Los Angeles, for example, is the American city with the second largest number of French speakers in the USA; they have come in search of work and study opportunities in different fields from the movie industry to information technology. This has made it possible for learners of French to access French and Francophone culture and practice the language locally.

Textbook Information

Currently, all French courses at IVC are Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) as the IVC French Department uses open educational resources (OER) in all classes. Students earning their General Education at IVC can earn an AA in French without ever paying for French textbooks. Complete professional OER material is posted on the Canvas site of each class and students have access to this material free of charge throughout the course. For further details, contact your instructor. Class material is subject to change without notice

Our instructors are highly educated, experienced and passionate about teaching the French language as well as the French and Francophone culture. We believe that interaction is the ultimate means and goal of language learning and we create a stress free, fun environment that makes French approachable. We use activities like listening, recognition, repetition, dialogues, skits, games, songs, and videos.
