General Education (GE) Patterns
Students at IVC have several general education pathways to choose from, depending on their academic goals and transfer plans. These options include the Associate of Arts (AA) and Associate of Science (AS) degree patterns, as well as transfer-focused GE plans such as Cal-GETC, IGETC, and CSU GE. Each pathway is designed to meet specific requirements for degree completion or transfer to California State University (CSU), University of California (UC), or other institutions, helping students tailor their education to best fit their career and academic aspirations.
Associate of Arts (AA) General Education
This pathway provides a strong foundation in the liberal arts and completes key lower-division coursework to support a smooth transition into an undergraduate program.
Associate of Science (AS) General Education
This pathway is structured for students pursuing an AS degree, typically in technical, scientific, or career-focused fields. It provides targeted preparation for immediate employment or advancement in a specialized industry, while also allowing flexibility for students who may choose to transfer to a four-year university to continue their studies in a related discipline.
California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC)
Cal-GETC is a new unified general education pattern that fulfills lower-division GE requirements for California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) transfer students who begin at IVC in Fall 2025 or later.
Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC)
IGETC is intended for students who began at IVC before Fall 2025 and have catalog rights, and who plan to transfer to a California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC). Students who do not meet these criteria must follow the Cal-GETC pattern instead.
CSU General Education Breadth (CSU GE)
CSU GE is intended for students who began at IVC before Fall 2025 and have catalog rights, and who plan to transfer to a California State University (CSU). Students who do not meet these criteria must follow the Cal-GETC pattern instead.
