This fall, Irvine Valley College proudly concluded a yearlong celebration marking four decades of educational excellence, innovation, and community impact. As we celebrated Founder’s Day on October 22, we took time to reflect not only on our humble beginnings but also on the remarkable journey that has shaped IVC into one of California’s premier community colleges.
Since becoming the state’s 105th accredited community college in 1985, IVC has grown from a modest institution nestled in the orange groves to a vibrant, 100-acre campus serving more than 23,000 students annually. Over the years, we’ve awarded more than 63,000 degrees and certificates, and supported thousands more in transferring to universities, launching careers, and pursuing lifelong learning. These numbers tell a powerful story—not just of growth, but of lives transformed, dreams realized, and a community empowered through education.
Our 40th anniversary has been a time to honor the legacy of those who built IVC and to celebrate the enduring spirit that continues to guide us. One of the most poignant moments of this year’s celebration was the orange tree plaque dedication held on October 22. This event paid tribute to the groves of orange trees that once surrounded our campus and earned us the affectionate nickname, “the little college in the orange groves.” Although the original trees are no longer standing, their legacy lives on through the 35 orange trees still growing on campus—quiet reminders of our natural heritage and the roots from which we’ve grown.
To further commemorate this milestone, over a span of five months, Marketing & Creatives Services staff have worked tirelessly to capture the voices and stories that define Irvine Valley College. We interviewed 24 individuals—13 faculty members, 8 classified professionals, and 3 administrators—representing a cross-section of our campus community. Among them were 10 retirees who graciously returned to share reflections from IVC’s formative years. Their insights and memories have helped preserve the heart and soul of our college, yielding over 30 hours of interview footage that chronicles our evolution through personal stories, pivotal moments, and shared experiences.
These stories remind us that Irvine Valley College is more than buildings and programs—it is a place where people come together to learn, grow, create lasting friendships, and make a difference. As we look to the future, we remain committed to the values that have guided us for 40 years: academic excellence, student success, and community engagement.
The celebrations may be wrapping up, but the impact of our 40th anniversary will resonate for years to come. It has been a time to honor our past, celebrate our present, and envision a future filled with promise. Cheers to the next 40 years of transforming lives and shaping the future—together.
Best,
John
