On November 10, the South Orange County Community College District will observe Veterans Day, a national holiday, recognizing veterans for their service and sacrifice. Although this designated day of remembrance is symbolic, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of finding ways to demonstrate our year-round commitment to our student veterans and to honor and recognize our employee veterans.

I invite you to participate in the upcoming Veterans Day Ceremony and Resource Fair scheduled for Thursday, November 9, 2023, from 11am – 1pm in the SSC Quad. We will gather as a college community to pay tribute to the brave men and women who selflessly serve our country, protecting our freedoms and ensuring our safety. Additionally, the Veterans Services Center (VSC) will launch the “Sound Off” project, including a photo-and-story blog, where veteran- and military-connected students share their personal experiences as narrated through the use of a comic book format.

These types of activities raise awareness of the valuable resources available to veteran students and their dependents as they transition from military to civilian life. Faculty and staff often serve as the first point of contact for students. Compassionate employees impart their insight and knowledge to teach students how to navigate the campus, direct them to the resources and support services available, and encourage them to become involved as part of our campus community.

The dedicated personnel in the VSC assist nearly 300 veterans, active duty, reservists, and their dependents in accessing the wide range of educational benefits offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The VSC provides additional services such as academic counseling, new student orientations, financial aid and scholarship assistance, mental health support, tutoring, access to computers, laptops and printing, a student lounge, and many other resources.

It is no surprise that for over 15 years, IVC has been designated as a Military Friendly® School.  Military Friendly® is the standard that measures an organization’s commitment, effort, and success in creating sustainable and meaningful benefit for the military community. I am very proud of our Veterans Services Center and applaud their campus-wide efforts serving veterans.

Please join me this Veterans Day in reaffirming our commitment to provide a welcoming and supportive campus environment for military service members and veterans at Irvine Valley College.

Best,
John
