We have entered the season of year-end celebrations including receptions, award/recognition ceremonies, and other special gatherings that celebrate the accomplishments of our students. These celebratory events culminate with IVC’s 40th annual commencement to be held tomorrow.

Forty years ago, IVC was affectionately known as “the little college in the orange groves.” And how fitting that tomorrow evening, we will gather on the very land that was once part of Irvine’s rich citrus heritage. From those humble beginnings, as the orange trees have been replaced by native plants and habitats surrounding state-of-the-art structures, IVC has blossomed into a vibrant, 100-acre campus.

Since becoming California’s 105th accredited community college in 1985, we are now proudly serving more than 23,000 students each year. In addition to awarding over 63,000 degrees and certificates, we continue to facilitate and support thousands of students on their journeys to universities, new careers, workforce training and lifelong learning.

This year, we proudly recognize 1,667 unique students with the following awards:

  • 1,250 certificates of achievement and
  • 3,147 Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or associate degrees for Transfer.

That totals 4,397 certificates and degrees conferred! However, these numbers tell more than just a story of personal growth, they represent lives changed, dreams realized and contribute to a community empowered through education. Behind every certificate or degree is the narrative of an IVC student who persevered to make it to this moment. Each student brings a unique story of resilience, ambition, and heart, and leaves a lasting mark on Irvine Valley College.

As preparation for commencement unfolds, let us pause to celebrate the achievements of each graduate, embrace new beginnings, and reaffirm our commitment to education and lifelong learning. Let us join to honor the accomplishments of the past and anticipate the promises of the future. Congratulations to the Class of 2025—your contributions have been integrated into IVC’s rich history.

Best,

John
