We have entered the season of year-end celebrations including dinners, receptions, award/recognition ceremonies, and other special events that celebrate the accomplishments of our students. These celebratory events culminate with IVC’s 38th annual commencement to be held on May 25, 2023.

Commencement is a special occasion particularly for those students who are the first in their families to graduate. A majority of IVC students enroll part-time, work, attend classes, and juggle multiple life responsibilities. Students overcome significant obstacles to reach this milestone and graduation serves as an affirmation of their dedication, resiliency and unyielding support from their families and loved ones.

Over the years, I often ask students if they plan to participate in commencement and it’s puzzling to me why they would decline an opportunity to commemorate their achievements. For transfer students in particular, the goal of achieving a baccalaureate degree can minimize the importance of receiving an associate degree. However, I encourage students to recognize all of the milestones throughout their educational journey and to validate the steps towards their ultimate long-term goals. Oftentimes, students need encouragement to celebrate their accomplishments and participate in this important ritual.

Like each of you, I look forward to celebrating our students at commencement. This time-honored tradition is the culmination of our individual and collective efforts. I sincerely thank all faculty, staff, and administrators for your commitment to student success and for creating and maintaining a learning environment where all students matter.

As we conclude another academic year, let us embrace a sense of pride in the meaningful ways that IVC is making a difference in our community.

Best,
John
