All international students who were physically present in the US must submit tax forms annually. For more information about this requirement, please see:
Employment Options for F-1 Students:
Off-campus employment is expressly prohibited without specific DHS approval through an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). Illegal employment is a deportable offense. Listed below are some employment options for F-1 visa students:
On-Campus Employment
International students are eligible to work on-campus; however, employment is not guaranteed and can be hard to obtain. On-campus employment does not require an application to DHS, but does require authorization from the International Student Program. Students are limited to 20 hours per week and must maintain their F-1 status to be eligible for on-campus employment. You are welcome to inquire at any department on campus to see if they can hire international students. Please note that international students are not eligible for work-study or financial aid employment.
Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a benefit of the F-1 visa that allows students to work off-campus in a job directly related to their major. This work can be done while attending IVC or upon graduation; however, you must have completed one academic year in F-1 status in order to be eligible. Students who obtain OPT while in school must maintain their F-1 status and are limited to 20 hours per week. Students who obtain OPT after completion of an associate degree or certificate must work 40 hours per week; enrollment in school is not required.
A formal application to CIS with an application fee is required each time that you apply for this benefit. Typical processing time is 60-90 days so plan accordingly. The International Student Programr will host workshops regarding this benefit throughout the semester for students wishing to learn more about OPT. Visit Events and Workshops for a list of available workshops.
NOTE: Students who have already had OPT authorization at a higher educational level are not eligible for OPT at IVC.
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is offered to students studying a major where off-campus employment is an “integral part of the established curriculum.” At IVC this is limited to only a few majors. Please inquiry at the International Student Office about this benefit.
