End of Duration of Status (D/S) Rule
On Friday, July 17, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published the final rule in the Federal Register to end “duration of status” (D/S) for F and J nonimmigrants among other significant changes.
The final rule changes the admission period for F-1 visa students to a fixed period of time. F-1 visa students who need additional time to complete their studies or who are requesting post completion OPT will have to file a request to extend their status with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in addition to working with their international advisor to obtain an extended I-20.
The International Student Program is actively reviewing and analyzing the rule. We will provide information to students impacted by the rule. We will offer a series of webinars for students on the rule. The webinars will be announced via email and through announcements on our website.
There will be a 60-day implementation period before the rule takes effect on September 15. The rule is phased in for students who are in the US before that date.
