Changes to FAFSA
In 2020, the FAFSA Simplification Act was enacted into law as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021. Changes are being made to the FAFSA form itself, how need analysis is calculated, along with many policies and procedures for schools that participate in the Title IV programs. These changes are meant to make applying for federal student aid easier for students.
How Changes in 2024-25 Makes the FAFSA Process Easier:
- The Student Aid Index (SAI) will replace the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). See Glossary & Terms .
- The FAFSA form is expected to be reduced to only 36 questions (from 100 previously).
- Students will be able to list up to 20 schools on their FAFSA (instead of only 10 previously).
- Parents without social security numbers will be able to set up a FSA ID / FAFSA account to electronically sign their students' FAFSA instead of having to submit a paper signature by mail, significantly reducing FAFSA processing time for students. Set up a FSA ID now.
The California Dream Act Application (CADAA) will include some of the changes from the new FAFSA, both of which will be implemented for the 2024–2025 award year - with some changes starting in 2023-24 award year to prepare students for more significant changes coming in 2024-25.
Changes to 2023-24:
- Income Reduction Appeal will be referred to as a "Special Circumstance" - EFC Calculation Appeal where changes to a student's or their family's financial situation (e.g. loss of a job, etc.) would justify the recalculation of a student's eligibility for aid.
- Dependency Override Appeal will be referred to as the "Unusual Circumstance" Appeal where a student's dependency status may be changed by a financial aid administrator based on unique situations (e.g. human trafficking, refugee or asylee status, parental abandonment, incarceration, etc.). Best of all, if IVC approved a student's unusual circumstance, their independent status will carry over when they renew their FAFSA form in future award years as long as they remain at IVC and their circumstances remain unchanged.
Dates and Deadlines: 2024-25 FAFSA
Due to the FAFSA Simplification changes being implemented by Federal Student Aid, the 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is scheduled to be released sometime in December 2023 instead of October 1 of each year as per usual. A date is to be announced.
The California Student Aid Commissions (CSAC) has announced that the priority deadline to submit the 2024-25 FAFSA/CADAA (for Cal Grant) has been extended from March 2, 2024, to April 2, 2024.
