- Title: Counselor - Part-time
- Department: Counseling
- Division: Guidance and Counseling
- Bio:
I am a first-generation college graduate and first-born daughter to Mexican immigrants from Michoacán, Mexico. I grew up in the hometown of In-n-Out, Baldwin Park, Ca in the San Gabriel Valley.
My motivation to pursue education was my family and a desire to improve my life. After I graduated from Baldwin Park HS, I attended community college at Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) and joined the Summer Bridge Program that gave me the opportunity to find my passions and learn to believe in myself as a student. After I earned my AA in Social and Behavioral Sciences I transferred to UCLA where I earned my BA in Sociology. As a student I loved working on campus as a peer mentor and this in-combination with my professional work experience in the High School Outreach Department at Mt. SAC inspired me to pursue a career in community college counseling. In May 2022 I earned my MS in Counseling with an option in Student Development in Higher Education and Certificate in Community College from Cal State Long Beach.
I have been working in a community college settings for 8 years as a classified full time staff member, and more recently as a adjunct faculty counselor. I have taught various counseling courses introducing students to higher education and enhancing their personal development. At IVC I serve as a Career Counselor where I work individually with students on their career development, facilitate career educational workshops, and outreach to the campus community in events about our services. My work as a counselor brings me joy! I get to work closely with students, learn about who they are, and help them decipher the complexities aof higher education to reach their academic, personal, and career goals.
I currently live in Downtown Long Beach with my partner Ivan and our doggy Maya. And when we are home and resting, we love to go on walks to our favorite restaurants and take bike rides to the beach.I look forward to getting to know more about you all and working together!
