IVC’s Arts Promenade and Café Creates a New Place to Connect

Arts Promenade and Cafe

IVC’s new Arts Promenade and Café opened on September 30, giving students, employees and visitors a welcoming place to gather, study, recharge and experience the arts. Spanning approximately three acres, the project brings together outdoor gathering spaces, sustainable landscaping and a café inspired by Irvine’s agricultural history.

The Promenade connects the Fine Arts Village and athletic fields with the larger campus through accessible pathways. A variety of seating areas offers room for everything from meeting friends and exchanging ideas to finding a quiet spot between classes. Built-in platforms provide a permanent outdoor setting for student and faculty artwork, strengthening the connection between the arts and everyday campus life.

At the heart of the space is a new, 500-square-foot café whose design draws inspiration from Irvine’s original agricultural buildings and packing houses. A distinctive mural, based on a 1938 aerial photograph of the Irvine Ranch, reinterprets the area’s historic fields and orchards through layers of aluminum and board-formed concrete. Solid and perforated panels represent row crops and orchards, while exposed concrete recalls fallow fields, roads and hedgerows. The panels extend at varying depths, changing the mural’s appearance as light shifts throughout the day.

Sustainability is another defining feature. More than 34,500 square feet of unused turf was replaced with water-efficient landscaping through the Municipal Water District of Orange County’s Turf Replacement Program. The transformation is estimated to save approximately 1.5 million gallons of water annually.

Approximately 8,000 plants and more than 100 trees bring shade, seasonal interest and wildlife habitat to the Promenade. California native and climate-appropriate plantings are supported by drip irrigation and weather-responsive smart irrigation, while bioretention basins capture and filter stormwater on site.

The project also supports IVC’s Inspire 2035 vision, establishing a future connection to the Jeffrey Open Space Trail and the planned Student Services and Student Union quad. With places to pause, connect and create, the Arts Promenade and Café offers a new destination for campus life. View Photos of the Arts Promenade and Café.
