As the holiday season approaches, we find ourselves at the intersection of reflection and celebration. In the midst of grading papers and closing out year-end projects, it’s easy to overlook the profound impact we have in influencing students’ lives. Please join me in taking a moment to identify ways to express gratitude within our workspaces.

Often overshadowed by the hustle and bustle of end of term activities, gratitude is a powerful tool for building a positive and supportive environment. As educators, we play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our students and our institution. Expressing gratitude fosters a sense of community and contributes to the culture of care at IVC.

Many of our shared governance meetings begin with a Caring Campus Moment, providing opportunities to identify a time when a colleague has shown care and compassion by helping others. These moments contribute to our positive campus atmosphere, reinforcing the belief that education is more than grades as it includes a holistic approach incorporating personal growth and making lasting connections. Consider incorporating gratitude practices into your classroom by creating a time of reflection and encouraging students to express gratitude for something or someone through their academic journey.

Within the classroom, take the time to express your own gratitude. Acknowledge the efforts and achievements of your students by emphasizing how their unique qualities add value to the learning environment. A simple note or a few words of appreciation can go a long way in building a strong teacher-student rapport. For those of us in non-instructional roles, reaching out to colleagues, sharing experiences, and expressing gratitude strengthen our collective efforts in continuing our vibrant community.

Let us let gratitude serve as a compass guiding us through this busy time of year. In acknowledging the positive aspects of our roles as educators, we enhance our own well-being by intentionally creating a more meaningful and enriching educational environment for our students.

I am grateful to each of you who authentically show up in your educational spaces to create and sustain learning environments designed for success. I am thankful to be a member of this Caring Campus that actively practices values and behaviors that create a sense of belonging.  I am grateful for IVC’s place within this community and in the meaningful ways we are engaging with community partners to promote full inclusion and continuous improvement.

Wishing you a happy and prosperous New Year.

Best,
John
