IVC is proud to participate in the I’m First-Gen College Student Celebration on Tuesday, November 8. With incredible support from the Classified Senate, Guided Pathways, and the Office of Student Equity, this celebration is an opportunity to recognize the contributions of our first-generation students, as well as our first-generation faculty, staff, and administrators.

I am very proud to identify as a first-gen student, as well as a proud graduate of a California community college. I know firsthand how important it is, for those of us who were the first in our families, to break barriers and achieve our goals through higher education. As a first-gen student and son of immigrants, I truly value a college education as a means to attain economic mobility for ourselves and for our families. As a college student, I saw education as a way to fulfill the hopes, aspirations, and dreams of my parents, who came to this country seeking better opportunities for their children.

Enrolling in college was a way to fulfill the dreams that my parents had for me; however, I also recognize that being the first can present challenges, such as learning how to navigate a complex educational system. Fortunately, I found valuable support through programs like EOPS at my local community college. I can assure you that IVC is here to support and guide you. We have many services and programs, as well as caring and dedicated staff, faculty, and administrators, to ensure that you are on the path toward achieving your personal goals in life.

I want to encourage you to dare to dream and overcome whatever challenges you may have about being the “first”, while embracing that as a source of pride and identity. If, as a college student, someone had said to me, “One day, you're going to be a college president” I probably would have laughed and said that was impossible. At that point in my life, I couldn’t visualize — let alone believe — that this was something I could achieve. However, beginning at a community college helped strengthen my self-confidence while providing an incredible support network. I now look back and am extremely thankful for that experience.

And so today, I want to celebrate you — our first-gen students! You should know that many of your professors and other college employees are also first-generation and we understand that experience. We are proud to be first-gen and I hope you too feel a sense of pride. I know your families are proud. You are the first in your families and that means so much for future generations.

To all IVC students: whether you are first-gen or not, please know that you are welcome and belong at Irvine Valley College. We are here to offer support and guidance and we look forward to celebrating your success along the way.

Best,

John
