IVC Launces the Rising Scholars Program
I am so proud of IVC’s official launch of the Rising Scholars Program held on January 24, 2024 at the Performing Arts Center. It was an incredible afternoon of inspiration and a beautiful convergence of the arts and education. I was struck by the power of artistic expression to convey the lived experiences and message of redemption from each participant. I invited Shawn Khalifa, Project Specialist for Rising Scholars to describe the program and the significance of its launch.
Education is more than just a path to a career; it's a gateway to personal transformation and societal change. This belief lies at the heart of the Rising Scholars Program. We recognize that not all students have equal access to educational resources, especially those who are justice-involved. By extending our reach beyond traditional settings, we are opening doors to learning by actively dismantling barriers that have long hindered the pursuit of knowledge and personal growth.
Our commitment to serving incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students and those with past convictions is not just an act of inclusion; it's a statement codifying our values. We believe in the transformative power of education – a power that illuminates the path to a brighter future by removing the stigma from one’s past. This program focuses on providing education, rewriting narratives, offering new beginnings, and nurturing potential that has been overlooked or undervalued.
The Rising Scholars Program reflects our understanding that learning needs are diverse, and a one-size-fits-all approach is insufficient. By meeting students where they are, we tailor our educational approach to their unique circumstances and challenges, fostering an environment where every student is seen, heard, and valued.
Moreover, this initiative is a testament to our belief in the wider benefits of education. Educated individuals uplift themselves and their communities. They become agents of positive change, contributing to a more informed, empathetic, and inclusive society. This ripple effect is why our commitment to education extends beyond our campus boundaries and into areas where access has traditionally been limited.
In essence, the Rising Scholars Program is more than an academic offering; it's a manifestation of our dedication to light the path for every student, ensuring that each journey, irrespective of its origin, has the potential for a triumphant destination.
As we move forward, I invite you to join us in supporting this noble endeavor. Together, we can make a profound impact, one student at a time. For additional information on the Rising Scholars Program contact ivcrisingscholars@ivc.edu.
