Congratulations to IVC’s Teachers of the Year for the 2021-22 academic year who were recognized by the South Orange County Community College District Board of Trustees on April 18. The Teacher of the Year program identifies and honors exemplary teachers, and highlights educational innovation, student learning, and the rewards of teaching.
Emily Liu: Outstanding Full-Time Teacher of the Year
Lauren Heyden always did her best thinking out on the trails. So when it came time to ruminate on a career path, it was only natural that her mind rambled toward environmental sustainability.
Before enrolling at Irvine Valley College, Heyden spent her time backpacking, hiking, and traveling the Sierra Nevadas, and beyond. She was happiest exploring nature, but felt inclined to do more. She wanted to make a difference.
As mandated by Title 22, State of California Department of Social Services, the minimum requirements for teachers in childcare centers are as follows:
Prior to employment, a teacher shall have completed at least six units of the education requirement specified below. After employment, a teacher hired with only six units shall complete, with passing grades, at least two units each semester until completion of 12 units in the areas specified below.
The Child Development program is relevant for individuals pursuing various interests and goals, including early childhood education teachers, child development specialists, and recreation leaders; those interested in professional careers providing services to children and families -- in children's centers, family day-care, recreational programs, special education programs, community agencies, health programs, and child advocacy; and those interested in marketing children's books, toys, magazines, and educational software. Parents and potential parents will also benefit from the program.
The Administration of Justice program acquaints pre-service and in-service students with the principles and practices of the criminal justice system in America and prepares students for employment in various agencies. Federal, state and local civil service regulations govern the appointment of criminal justice candidates. Eligibility for appointment depends upon performance in competitive written and oral examinations as well as education and experience.
The curriculum includes courses in two- and three-dimensional design, drawing, painting, and art history. All courses are designed to develop students’ understanding and appreciation of the artist’s technical and aesthetic concerns. Studio courses teach students both to expand their basic design, drawing and painting skills and to become more visually aware of their world. These courses are designed for artists of all backgrounds and levels of technical ability.

The Studio Arts program provides students with a wide array of fundamentals in basic design, drawing, printmaking and painting. Focused on developing artistic vision and technique, the faculty in the program are working artists as well as skilled educators. The curriculum is designed for artists of all backgrounds and technical ability. For art majors, the studio art courses may be taken to satisfy the requirements for the Associate in Arts Degree in Art. The studio art courses also meet the general education requirements in fine arts.
