Dear Students:

Sadly, we are writing about another senseless act of violence. We have been learning about what appears to be a targeted horrific mass shooting that occurred on Saturday evening in Monterey Park that killed 10 people and injured 10 others. In addition, authorities are also investigating another incident in neighboring Alhambra, where thankfully no shooting occurred.

Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the community of Monterey Park. We are sickened, saddened, and frustrated that these horrendous acts of violence continue to occur. As an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPSI), IVC stands with our AAPI community.

At IVC, we actively engage in welcoming, embracing and supporting all individuals. If you or a fellow classmate needs support, please contact the Health and Wellness Center at 949-451-5221. Additional services and resource information are available on the IVC Health and Wellness Center website.

We recognize that we are living during an incredibly stressful time and our world changes day by day. We are proceeding with plans to hold our Lunar New Year Celebration on Tuesday, January 24. As part of the event, we are planning for a moment of silence and reflection at noon in front of the Student Services Building. Lunar New Year is a time to pause and wish for health and prosperity. Let us take this opportunity to come together and reflect while also remembering our neighbors and community members who may have been impacted by this weekend’s events.

As an open institution, we are accessible to the public and the community at large. Therefore, situational awareness is prudent. If you see something, it is critical to say something. You can always contact IVC Campus Police at 949-451-5200.

Through our commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA), we strive to build a campus culture that reflects our lives as members of intersecting communities, experiences, identities, and abilities. We encourage your continued support of these endeavors.

We can all support collective belonging and humanity. In the coming days, with news still unfolding from these latest events, let us all support one another in our caring campus way, while remaining vigilant.

Sincerely,

John C. Hernandez, Ph.D.
