Students in the humanities address fundamental questions of cultural meaning and value. The courses in the department emphasize reading and writing critically to understand ideas, history, culture, media and theory from diverse perspectives. In addition to strengthening core academic skills, students will have a stronger sense of civic awareness, the importance of analysis and academic research, and the value of social justice.
The English department offers a range of courses in academic writing, creative writing, and literature. The curriculum emphasizes the integration of reading and writing throughout its courses, reflecting the faculty's concern that students not divorce the study of language from the study of cultures nor lose sight of the uses or abuses of writing within a cultural context.
