Purpose and Services

As IVC’s first cross-disability student-led club, DisCo aims to create an inclusive, welcoming, and accessible environment for students of all abilities to come together in solidarity for their experiences. Welcoming all who have a disability—either diagnosed or undiagnosed—have known someone with a disability, or want to be a better ally for the disabled community, DisCo’s mission is to cultivate a safe space that empowers the disability community, offers support to ensure academic success, and advocates for better accessibility and belonging. Even if you don’t think this club applies to you, DisCo urges you to join and consider how increasing accessibility can benefit every student! Universal Design describes how making something accessible to the broadest range of users improves the general product, environment, or service experience. Think of how ramps on sidewalks and buildings benefit not only people in wheelchairs but also parents with strollers or suitcases, delivery workers with carts, and kids with scooters. Academically, think of how receiving PowerPoint and online resources from instructors benefits all students, not just those with learning disabilities.
