Allyson Nejera

The Community College League of California has named IVC student Allyson Najera to the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-California Academic First Team. This year, 112 students were chosen from across the 116 California community colleges for the All-California Academic First, Second, and Third Teams.

Allyson, who is co-vice president of IVC’s PTK Club, will graduate later this month with an associate in arts degree. While still awaiting acceptance decisions from private universities, she is currently considering attending UC Berkeley or UCLA. In addition to the PTK award, Allyson has also received a UC Regents Scholarship and a Coca-Cola Scholars award. She also serves as a senator in the Associated Students of IVC (ASIVC).

Allyson plans to complete her undergrad in sociology, possibly minoring in public policy. She says, “I hope to conduct research on mental health and higher education resource accessibility gaps in underserved communities with large populations of first-generation immigrant youth.” Upon completion of her undergrad, Allyson hopes to pursue a master's and doctorate in public policy and would like to work in the non-profit field focusing on supporting youth with mental health and higher education.

PTK recognizes the academic achievement of college students and provides opportunities for its members to grow as scholars and leaders. Grades, leadership, and community service determine selection to the All-California First, Second, and Third Teams. The students selected represent some of the best of the 1.8 million students enrolled in California's 116 community colleges.
