The IVC Speech Team started their season off strong by winning 47 awards across four tournaments.
On September 28 and 29, the team traveled to El Camino College to make their debut at the PSCFA Warm Up Invitational. Thirty students represented IVC Forensics at the tournament competing in events such as NPDA (team) Debate, IPDA (individual) Debate, Extemporaneous, Impromptu, and Persuasive Speaking. In the end, IVC was victorious by winning 14 awards at their opening tournament.
From October 11-13, the team tested their abilities again at the Janesse Davidson Memorial Tournament held at Concordia University, Irvine. Despite being a grueling tournament with 23 colleges and universities in attendance, IVC Speech proved their skills by winning an additional 12 awards. Among the many accolades, newcomer to the team Alex Velez was named the 1st Place Junior IPDA Speaker beating out all 44 competitors.
On October 19, IVC Forensics assessed their virtual speaking talents by competing at the NOF Oak Synchronous Invitational. The team earned another six awards at the tournament proving that their communication skills can seamlessly transition to an online modality. Most notably, the team captured the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medal in Extemporaneous Speaking, along with the Gold and Silver Medal in Impromptu Speaking.
IVC Speech traveled to San Diego on October 25 to compete at the Sunset Cliffs Invitational held at Point Loma Nazarene University. The tournament proved to be difficult with 25 universities and colleges in attendance, some traveling as far as Florida, Tennessee, Texas and Illinois. However, IVC Speech was ready for the challenge. This tournament proved to be the team’s most successful of the season thus far with 15 awards being won in Poetry, Informative, Impromptu, and Extemporaneous Speaking.
The team is looking forward to continuing their success at the Griffin Invitational at Grossmont College in November, and the PSCFA Fall Championship Tournament in December.
