Irvine Valley College (IVC) student Lea Castaneda recently completed a successful journey as shift supervisor at the Irvine Target as part of IVC’s Cooperative Work Experience (CWE) program. CWE is an academic program offering students the opportunity to earn college credits while learning on-the-job, whether paid or unpaid.
Lea says Target management gave her valuable direction, feedback, and guidance that helped her gain more confidence in her skills.
“I became a stronger and more confident leader,” says Lea. “Their constant assistance and advice was invaluable.”
In her role, Lea was trained on how to manage the front floor and was a part of the team that trained seasonal hires.
Lea, who has two children who are IVC alumni, returned to the college last summer after taking a few years off. Upon her return, she started off slowly by taking three units her first semester. She then increased to six units in Fall 2020, and now she’s up to 12.5 units this semester.
Lea is currently pursuing an associate degree and says her CWE experience at Target inspired her to pursue a career in business management.
