What is High School CE articulation?

Articulation of career education (CE) courses allows students to complete academically rigorous high school or ROP courses while still in high school and to receive college credit at Irvine Valley College for those courses. Articulated CE courses are building blocks in an educational pathway leading to higher education and/or employment.

  1. Students earn college credit for courses taken in a high school or ROP program
  2. Students do not need to repeat coursework at the college
  3. Students develop skills and knowledge prior to college
  4. Students decrease the cost of college tuition and textbook fees
  5. Students complete college programs of study more quickly

Note:  Check with an Irvine Valley College counselor about the transferability of articulated CE courses to the University of California system.  Policies may vary by UC campus.

High school students may be granted college credit pursuant to established Career Education (CE) articulation agreements between the high school or Regional Occupation Program (ROP), and Irvine Valley College.

The procedures to obtain credit for high school to college articulation are as follows:

  1. Apply Online.  Apply online to one of the colleges in the District (Irvine Valley College or Saddleback College). There is no requirement to be currently registered in a college class to receive credit. You can apply to become an Irvine Valley College student here:  Apply
  2. Meet with a Counselor.  The student will initiate the assessment process by meeting with an Irvine Valley College counselor to submit the Credit for High School Prior Learning Request. The Irvine Valley College counselor will be filling out and submitting the Credit for High School Prior Learning Request. An official high school transcript will need to be provided with the request. High school transcripts may be provided electronically or as a hard copy in a sealed envelope.     NOTE:  The course name on the high school transcript must match the course name on the articulation agreement..
  3. Validate Request.  Determination of whether a specific course or elective credit is to be awarded in any area is made by faculty in the discipline who normally teach the course and is detailed in a course articulation agreement. An articulation agreement for the requested course must be verified to be approved. A list of approved articulation agreements may be found on the college’s website. (Insert link to articulation agreements list).   The Irvine Valley College counselor will conduct this verification.
  4. Process & Notate.  Once the documents have been reviewed and approved, the Irvine Valley College Counseling Department will forward the petition with supporting documents to the Irvine Valley College Admissions and Records Office for processing.  After Admissions and Records receives the petitions and supporting documents, it will take up to two business days * for the course and grade to be notated on the student’s Irvine Valley College transcript. Once the credit appears on the transcript it is not reversible or repeatable.
    *At peak times this may take longer.

A letter grade may be assigned for a High School to College Articulation course and the course will be identified as “Credit by Examination” on the transcript in accordance with official grading assignment on the Course Outline of Record (COR). The enrollment fee for credit by examination will not be charged for credit awarded under this provision.

Only students who are successful in obtaining a standard grade of B or better will be approved for credit and the Irvine Valley College course, units, grade, and a credit by exam notation will appear on a student’s Irvine Valley College transcript in the designated term in which the course was completed at the high school.

For high school courses taken over two semesters to satisfy an Irvine Valley College course, a grade of B or better is required in each high school course. Grades of B- or lower in either semester do not qualify. Full credit for the Irvine Valley College course will be awarded, not partial credit. Grades from both semesters will be averaged to determine a final grade of A or B. Plus (+) and minus (-) grades will not be awarded, but will be averaged as follows:

For Partners: How to Articulate High School CE Courses with Irvine Valley College

Send materials to Irvine Valley College Dean’s Office. High Schools and ROPs interested in articulating a course with Irvine Valley College should contact the office of Traci Fahimi, Dean of Business Sciences, Social & Behavioral Sciences, and Academic Programs, and provide the following information via email to Connie Frey and Traci Fahimi

  1. Name of high school or ROP class
  2. Name and contact information of the faculty lead for the high school or ROP class.
  3. Name of Irvine Valley College course or courses that you believe articulate with the high school or ROP course.
  4. Official Course description or course outline of record that identifies:
    • Prerequisites
    • Course objectives
    • Competency and skill requirements
    • Textbooks/materials used in the class
  5. A sample course syllabus
  6. A copy of the final exam used in the course

The Irvine Valley College dean’s office will circulate the materials to theappropriate Irvine Valley College discipline faculty leads.  High school (CE) articulation is facultydriven and the Irvine Valley College dean’s office serves only as a facilitator.

Upon review of the materials, the Irvine Valley College faculty lead will notify the Irvine Valley College dean’s office of the decision.

  1. If YES:  The Irvine Valley College dean’s office will prepare and circulate an electronic articulation agreement for signatures, house the agreement in Irvine Valley College’s sharepoint system, and post the agreement to the college’s high school CE articulation website.
  2. If NO:  The Irvine Valley College dean’s office will notify the high school or ROP that the course will not be articulated.
  3. If UNSURE:  The Irvine Valley College dean’s office will facilitate a meeting between Irvine Valley College discipline lead faculty and the high school or ROP faculty to address questions and concerns.  Irvine Valley College lead faculty will then inform the Irvine Valley College dean’s office of the decision, and the dean’s office will inform the high school or ROP of the decision.

The Irvine Valley College dean’s office will need the names and emails of the following individuals for signing the agreement:

  1. External (from high school or ROP):  Lead faculty, Lead administrator
  2. Internal (from Irvine Valley College):  Lead faculty, department chair, instructional dean
