Irvine Valley College has both an Adult English as a Second Language (AESL) program and an English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Please see below to explore the differences between each program. For the ESL and AESL course list, please refer to the ESL Course Schematic chart.
Adult English as a Second Language (AESL)
- English language and U.S. culture lessons to help at work, with family, in the community, or at school:
- Speaking with people at your job or your children’s school
- Writing personal or professional emails
- Learning about U.S. culture and government
- Classes meet for 10 hours a week (multi-skill courses) or for 3 hours a week (skill courses such as conversation or digital literacy)
- Noncredit (0 units)
- Costs: No enrollment fees except for a small Health Fee, parking fee, and textbooks and materials
- Classes meet during the day or at night
- Open entry: Students can enroll up to the 13th week of the semester
English as a Second Language (ESL)
- Academic English preparation for a degree or certificate at IVC or to transfer to a four-year university:
- Writing academic essays
- Learning academic vocabulary
- Reading and analyzing complex texts
- Classes meet for 5 hours a week (academic writing courses) or for 3 hours a week (academic vocabulary and reading courses)
- Credit (3 unit and 5 unit courses)
- Costs: A per unit fee, a small Health Fee, parking fee, and textbooks and materials
- Classes meet during the day or at night
- Students need to enroll before the end of the 3rd week of the semester (census)
