Sustaining a Supportive Ecosystem through Local, State, and Federal Advocacy

Creating and sustaining an ecosystem that supports undocumented students is a year-long commitment that requires authentic collaboration between faculty, staff, administrators, and partners. This webinar will include an overview of the various forms of on-campus and off-campus advocacy. Presenters will also offer a framework for how campus leaders can engage in undocumented student advocacy at their local campus, and the importance of state and federal policies that eliminate barriers, prioritize affordability and access, and create the conditions for unconditional belonging and ultimately – student success.

Dr. Eddie Ramirez, DMD

Eddie Ramirez was brought to the United States by his parents at the age of one and half years old. The impact of his parents decision to immigrate to the U.S. was not discovered until Ramirez was 9 years old, when he discovered he was undocumented. With everything opposing him, he had one dream — to become a dentist. Despite multiple challenges and obstacles, Ramirez completed his undergraduate studies at Portland State University in 2014 and proceeded to become the first undocumented/DACAmented individual accepted, matriculated, graduated, and now be practicing from Oregon Health & Science University: School of Dentistry. He graduated in 2018 from OHSU School of Dentistry with his Dentariae Medicinae Doctorate (Doctor of Dental Medicine). He has been practicing dentistry since graduating at Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center, an FQHC focused on migrant communities. He dedicates his efforts to helping vulnerable populations and speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Additionally, Ramirez stays active with the Oregon Dental Association and is a national leader with the American Dental Association. He does all of this while ensuring Ramirez still has time to mentor and support students from all over the nation and be an example that dreams can come true — even without legal status.

From Policy to Practice: Implementing Policies with Students in Mind

As practitioners responsible for supporting student success, there are several laws, regulations, and budget investments that you should become familiar with as you advise and guide undocumented students. The volume of information about policies and budgets can be overwhelming—what are the Legislature and Chancellor’s Office expectations for how campuses support undocumented student success? How does successful application of statewide policies look at the campus level? In this webinar, presenters will address these questions. Participants will hear directly from students about their own experiences navigating a community college.

Undocu Resource Fair/ Undocu Portraits

Students will have the opportunity to explore on-campus and off-campus resources to better support their academic journey at Irvine Valley College. Ph.D. Dreamers, Central American Resource Center (CARECEN-LA), World Relief, and OC LGBTQ Center are among the participants bringing information to all students at IVC. A display of undocumented portraits (undocumented individuals sharing their stories) will be available for all IVC participants to learn about undocumented jobs, hobbies, and experiences living undocumented in our communities.

Know Your Rights Workshop

In collaboration with CARECEN-LA, and College of the Canyons, students and families can join us to learn what to do when confronted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and understand warrants.

Healing Circles by Dream Scholars: Undocumented journey to Medical School

Angeles talks about her experiences with poverty shock, the ping-pong effect, and imposter syndrome and how mentorship and community saved her. She recently submitted her medical school application and hopes to begin in Fall 2023.

Centering the Undocumented Student Experience Through Campuswide Collaboration

Campus stakeholder collaboration into a student's educational journey and their goals to achieve a degree, credential, or transfer to a four-year university is essential. These silos can sometimes be hidden, but their effects are clearly visible in a student’s experience. Recent policy reforms have been designed with the intention of breaking down silos and fostering greater campus collaboration. How do those policies look in practice? This webinar will provide participants with an overview of recent policies that inform a supportive ecosystem for undocumented student success. The policies will provide a framework for how participants can create an ecosystem of unconditional belonging for students.

This is an informative session intended to support AB-540 students eligible to submit a California Dream Act Application. Dream Scholars Program will walk eligible students through the application and answer any questions students might have while completing this financial aid application.

This presentation given by Christine Silvestre from CIELO will provide an overview of their free programs and services for aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners. CIELO, a nonprofit organization in Orange County, helps individuals pursue their business dreams with the education, support, and resources to build a solid business foundation. With this presentation, you'll get information on key questions to ask yourself before you start a business, the entrepreneurial mindset, pros and cons to being a small business owner, and how CIELO can assist you in taking the next steps toward starting your own business.

Undocumented Student Advocacy Day
There will be no system-wide webinar on this day.
This day is intended for campuses to engage in local campus activities that enable undocumented students to feel welcome and heard. A suggested list of activities will be provided in advance of Undocumented Student Action Week (USAW), and you may post pictures of your events on social media using the hashtag #USAW2022. We encourage colleges to utilize this day to host their own events in honor of USAW! On this day, the Chancellor’s Office, in partnership with the Community College League of California, Foundation for California Community Colleges, and statewide advocacy organizations, will be meeting with members of Congress to advocate for policy solutions that support the long-term success of undocumented students.

Ensuring Equitable Access to Financial Aid for Undocumented Students

This webinar will focus on how campuses can ensure undocumented students obtain financial resources to cover the total cost of success. It will also include a review of the California Dream Act, California Nonresident Tuition Exemption Request (AB 540 Affidavit), and other grants/resources available to undocumented students in California. In addition to a review of the various applications and processes for financial aid, speakers will provide practitioners with guidance on how to best support students through this process. This issue can be very complex, and campuses should utilize a student-centered approach to develop informational collateral and advisement strategies that help students apply for financial resources.
