Phi Theta Kappa's Scholarship Details
Phi Theta Kappa's commitment to scholarship extends to its programs
to assist its members in furthering their education at both the
two-year and four-year level, and through Society programs.
National Deans' List
Each Phi Theta Kappa inductee is automatically nominated for inclusion
in the National Dean's List, the only biographical publication of
honor students in two-year, four-year and graduate programs. To
be included in the publication, Phi Theta Kappa inductees must submit
the biographical data form they will receive in the month of June
following their induction. Members who submit the form become eligible
for five $1,000 National Dean's List Scholarships. Winners are selected
by a random computer search. Members who submit the form are also
eligible for additional National Dean's List Scholarships. All members
who submit the form will be included in the publication, and are
under no obligation to purchase the publication. For more information
on these scholarships, contact Headquarters at (800) 946-9995, Ext.
934.
The Academic All-American Team Competition
Phi Theta Kappa, in conjunction with the American Association of
Community Colleges and USA Today Newspaper, sponsors an annual Academic
All-American Team Competition, which awards significant stipends
to twenty outstanding graduating students enrolled in AACC member
colleges. From nominations sent in by two-year college presidents
around the nation, twenty finalists are selected to the First team
and receive stipends for continued education; Second and Third team
members are also selected. All members nominated for the All-USA
Team are eligible to apply for summer internships with the United
States Department of Education, the Association of Community College
Trustees and the National Science Foundation. This unique opportunity
allows students to work in the nation's capital, to see the functions
of government first-hand, and to participate in actual Department
of Education projects. For information on the U.S. Department of
Education intern program, contact Headquarters at (800) 946-9995,
Ext.918.
Nomination packets are sent to college Presidents and Phi Theta
Kappa advisors each fall. If you are interested in competing, please
contact a chapter advisor for more details.
Honors Institute Scholarship
An Honors Institute Scholarship for the most outstanding essay
related to the Honors Topic, "The Arts: Landscape of Our Time".
The Institute Scholarship must be used for the upcoming Honors Institute,
under the conditions established by International Headquarters.
An individual member or an entire chapter may submit only one typed,
original essay of between 750 and 1500 words to be considered for
this award, and this essay must accompany the entry form. Contact
a chapter advisor for more information on these scholarships.
Guistwhite Scholarships
In 1992, Phi Theta Kappa named the first Guistwhite Scholars in
honor of Dr. Jack Guistwhite. While an administrator at Florida
Atlantic University, Dr. Guistwhite developed the first transfer
scholarship awarded exclusively to a Phi Theta Kappa transfer student.
Each year, 10 members will be selected, by application, to receive
$5,000 scholarships for completion of a baccalaureate degree. You
must apply prior to your graduation from a two-year college, and
must have a cumulative 3.5 GPA. These scholarships are paid over
a two-year period. Applications are available in September, by request
only, from your chapter advisors.
Transfer Scholarship Database
Phi Theta Kappa members who indicate permission on their Membership
Profile form are automatically entered into the transfer database,
marketed to senior institutions interested in recruiting transfer
students. Many Phi Theta Kappa members are being offered additional
scholarship opportunities from senior institutions through this
new member benefit.
Transfer Scholarships
As a service to transferring members, Headquarters annually compiles
a listing of all scholarship funds especially designated for Phi
Theta Kappa transfers. Approximately $22 million is offered by some
250 four-year and senior level institutions. Headquarters does not
administer these scholarship funds, but works closely with four-year
and senior level institutions to secure them for Society transfers.
The Phi Theta Kappa 3.5 PLUS Annual Journal, which you will receive
after your induction, lists all the Phi Theta Kappa scholarships
available.
