A Brief history of Psi Beta
Ruth Cousins inspired Psi Beta, the national honor society in psychology for community colleges. Psi Beta was founded and incorporated in the state of Tennessee by Carol Tracey with eleven charter chapters on November 5, 1981. Also in 1981, Psi Beta began publishing the Psi Beta Newsletter, which continues to be published three times a year – fall, winter, and spring. Psi Beta’s affiliation with the American Psychological Association was approved in August of 1988. On February 19, 1994 Psi Beta was approved for membership in the Association of College Honor Societies as the first two-year college honor society member. As of August, 2000 Psi Beta had approved 155 charters and inducted a cumulative total of over 16,000 members across the country.
