Angelika Nemeth, an IVC dance faculty member since 2003, is recognized as one of the world’s premier dancers teaching and performing Raqs Sharqi (popularly referred to as “belly dance”). She also teaches folkloric and regional dances from the Arab and Persian world. She has directed and produced numerous critically acclaimed world dance concerts. In 1997 and again in 2001 she co-produced the historic 1st and 2nd International Conferences on Middle Eastern Dance. In 1992, the Orange County Register described her as one of the “most memorable world dancers,” and in 2008 Orange Coast Magazine featured her in their Best of O.C. issue. She received the “Best Modern Egyptian Dancer” award by the International Academy of Middle Eastern Dance and was nominated for her outstanding achievement in Choreography. She has organized and led dance study tours to Egypt and Turkey, and has been a guest choreographer for European dance companies. Angelika Nemeth has certificates in Dance and Theatre Arts and Related Technologies, and holds a B.S. degree in education and a M.A. in psychology specializing in the Transformational Arts.
She provides her students with a solid technical foundation, ensuring that they develop not only an ear for musical structure but also an understanding of the dance’s cultural roots. She is invited as a featured artist to perform, teach, and judge at festivals, conventions, workshops, and competitions worldwide. As a performer she is known for her earthy and fiery presentations, while also displaying technical expertise and nuanced musicality. She has danced for royalty and celebrities and has been featured in settings from intimate supper clubs to large concert halls.
She is the artistic director and choreographer of the internationally acclaimed Angelika Nemeth Dance Ensemble (A.N.D.E.), whose repertoire includes classic and folkloric dances from throughout the Near and Middle East. The Ensemble was honored as “Best Middle Eastern Dance Troupe” by the International Academy of Middle Eastern Dance and has been featured in numerous concerts and videos. In 2007 they were invited to perform in Cairo, Egypt at the prestigious international dance festival, “Ahlan Wa Sahlan”.
Angelika Nemeth’s artistic legacy has significantly influenced the field of Middle Eastern dance not only in Southern California but also globally.
