Wal-Mart Donates to Students

March 2, 2007

IRVINE, CA – Wal-Mart Donates $1,000 to underprivileged students at Irvine Valley College, (IVC).
This contribution has been used to benefit underprivileged college students attending IVC, according to Anna Smith in the Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS) office. Some 225 single parents attend classes at IVC, as part of the EOPS, with the hope of one day fulfilling their dream of a college education.

In December, IVC hosts an annual holiday party for single-parent students and their families. Participating families are treated to a complementary lunch with all the trimmings, and every child in attendance receives a toy from Santa Claus.

“We appreciate Wal-Mart’s donation,” said IVC Foundation Director Al Tello. “It means a lot to us.”
Wal-Mart believes in a philosophy of operating globally and giving back locally. By doing so, Wal-Mart makes the greatest impact on communities by supporting causes that are important to its customers and associates right in their own neighborhoods. That’s why Wal-Mart makes the majority of its charitable donations at the local level.

Having given more than $245 million to charity in 2005, Wal-Mart is proud to have been named by the Chronicle of Philanthropy as the largest corporate cash donor in America. As is the Wal-Mart Foundation’s motto: “We believe good… works.”
