IVC Speech Team Wins Double Sweepstakes
at the 2007 PSCFA “Craig Grossman”
Spring Championships

IRVINE, CA – The Irvine Valley College speech and debate team experienced their best tournament of the season at the 2007 Pacific Southwest Collegiate Forensics Association (PSCFA)“Craig Grossman” Spring Championships held at LA Valley College, February 23-25, 2007. The team won first place sweepstakes among all two and four schools in the novice category and took third place overall among community colleges, trailing Moorpark by one point and Orange Coast College by 11 points.
“This year has been a real learning experience,” said Debate Coach Gary Rybold. “All of our team members are first year students, so they have had to work harder than experienced teams. The one thing this team is sure of that if you want to learn you have to put in the time researching and practicing.”
The team has been burning the midnight oil getting ready for both state and national debate championships in March. The coaching staff has also stepped up with additional time. Coach Rybold estimates the seven IVC coaches have offered over 100 hours of coaching each week.
PSCFA honored IVC’s own Craig Grossman, current IVC Professor of Speech Communication and former Director of Forensics by naming the 2007 Spring Championships in his name. He was nominated for his years of service and dedication to the forensics activity. Grossman was honored with a special award and offered an inspiring speech to the league.
“I was extremely honored to receive this award. PSCFA hosts some of the finest tournaments and to be able to speak to the students and to present the awards is a memory I will always cherish,” said Craig Grossman.
The IVC Forensics Squad’s next competition will be the CCCFA, California Community College Forensics Association, State Championships on March 8-11 at Woodland Hills, CA.
