IVC-TV goes live online
March 22, 2006
The public can now view a live broadcast of Irvine Valley College Television, Channel 33, 24-hours a day via the college Web site. The broadcast went live on March 8 after two months of beta testing. With beta testing, the college receives feedback from computer users and viewers before a final version is completed.
The live cable TV signal is sent to an encoder, which converts it to a digital format and delivers it to a streamer which sends the signal to the Internet. Streaming video is a sequence of moving images that are
compressed for the Internet. It allows images and sound to be received and displayed instantly in a continuous stream. With no download time, students can access cable programs immediately.
Streaming video offers distance learners an alternative to cable television. It is available on demand and can be viewed on a laptop computer or any electronic portable device connected to the Internet. Among the popular programs on IVC-TV are the Shakespeare Lecture Series, The Mechanical Universe, Energy Management Technology, and MATHLINE, Live. Students can also view the broadcast schedule online. Lectures and other important student information will also be available via iPods by summer.
