Careers in Science Workshop
February 20, 2006
Astronomy professor Roy McCord is hosting a workshop March 4 for high school teachers to help them better understand
the laser industry and to encourage students—particularly young women—to pursue careers in science. McCord will
focus on photonics, the use of electromagnetic energy in optics, laser technology, electrical engineering, materials
science, and information storage and processing. The workshop will be held in Room B-311 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
McCord and other guest speakers will discuss the wide range of career opportunities in the growing fields of lasers and optics, and will conduct an in-class laboratory using optical lenses and basic imaging technology. The college’s astronomical observatory will also be used to make observations.
The workshop is supported by a grant from the International Society for Optical Engineering. For more information, contact Roy McCord at (949) 451-5331 or at rmccord@ivc.edu.
