President Roquemore receives international award
February 10, 2006
Irvine Valley College President Dr. Glenn R. Roquemore has been named a recipient of the Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction for his efforts on behalf of the college’s Alpha Omega Mu chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges.
Dr. Roquemore, whose work “to promote the goals” of PTK has helped to make Irvine Valley’s chapter one of the fastest growing in the Western U.S., will be recognized in a ceremony at the Washington Convention & Trade Center in Seattle, WA, April 21.
He and other executive officers from community colleges throughout the U.S. will be honored during the Third General Session of Phi Theta Kappa’s 88th Annual International Convention, April 20-22. Former U.S. Secretary of State and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Madeleine Albright will be the keynote speaker. More than 3,600 PTK student members and guests are expected to attend.
Dr. Roquemore is one of only a handful of college presidents to be selected for the award. He was nominated by the students of Irvine Valley’s PTK chapter for “the outstanding support he has shown for community college students, his commitment to academic excellence, and for his professional leadership.”
For Dr. Roquemore, the award came as a surprise. “I didn’t know that I had been nominated. That this nomination comes from our students, who have worked hard to make our PTK chapter one of the largest clubs on campus, makes this honor especially humbling,” Dr. Roquemore said.
The Shirley B. Gordon Award is named in honor of the distinguished educator and current Chairman of the International Phi Theta Kappa Board of Directors.
