"2001: A Space Odyssey" star to speak at fundraiser

Gary Lockwood, who is best known for his role as Dr. Frank Poole in the Stanley Kubrick masterpiece, will speak at a fundraiser for the Emeritus Institute in the Forum Theatre on Friday, June 3, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 for general admission; $15 for students.

Thirty-seven years after he became known as the Space Cowboy for his role as an astronaut in the futuristic film that has become a cult classic, Lockwood will share his experiences of a film career that spans 39 films and scores of TV guest appearances.

Lockwood is a long time supporter of student film work. The proceeds from his appearance will help fund Emeritus Institute programs like “The Heartbreak Café,” an episodic cable TV show that is filmed at IVC. It uses students as its acting and technical base to produce the light drama. The 30-minute show airs in ten cable markets throughout Southern California, and has a growing Internet audience. “The Heartbreak Café” was created as a classroom lab by professional actor and director Robert Conrad to teach students how to create a Hollywood-quality production.

Lockwood will comment on clips from his movies that will be shown during the evening, and will answer questions from the audience. Although he has worked with film legends Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda and Dennis Hopper, Lockwood rates his experience with Kubrick, and later on the “Star Trek” series, as the defining moments in his career.
