IVC music professor named Fulbright Scholar
May 9, 2005
Dr. Stan Breckenridge, an associate professor of music at IVC, has received a Fulbright Scholar award to teach in Poland this fall. He will teach at the Marie Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin.
Breckenridge has been an instructor at Irvine Valley since 1995 and is a full professor at California State University, Fullerton. He holds a doctorate and a master’s degree from Claremont Graduate University, and a bachelor’s degree from CSUF. He has nearly twenty years of teaching experience and is an author, educational consultant, vocalist, composer and professional musician.
In Poland, Breckenridge will teach “American Culture through African American Music,” a survey of music from early American folk songs to the modern era, including ragtime, blues, boogie-woogie, jazz, and other genres. There is long-standing interest in American music and culture in Poland, and Breckenridge is recognized for his ability to teach American culture through its music.
He was named a Fulbright grantee in part for his informative, scholarly, and entertaining presentations on the most significant trends in black American music, and for his cultural sensitivity to races and cultures that have historically been subjects of persecution. Breckenridge
believes that the strong interest in black American music in Poland lies in the distinct parallels that can be drawn between the persecution of Polish Jews and African-Americans. In 2004, Breckenridge was a guest lecturer at universities in Lublin and Torun, Poland.
Breckenridge lives in San Juan Capistrano with his wife, Glennis and daughter Chelsea.
