Professor receives national excellence award

Professor Bill Hewitt was awarded the 2005 Achievement of Excellence Award by the American Association of Community Colleges, in March. Hewitt is the Director of Supportive Services and has been a long-time counselor in Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (E.O.P.S.).

Hewitt is recognized for his contribution to the revision of the Title V Regulations for E.O.P.S., as co-author of new legislation that provided funding for the state’s Disabled Students Programs and Services, (DSP&S), and as co-developer of the AmeriCorps literacy program for CalWORKs students. CalWORKS provides temporary financial assistance and employment services to low-income families.

He is also recognized for his long service as a community college professional that assists students facing financial, emotional, physical, cultural or linguistic challenges, and is acknowledged for his commitment to promoting student success. Hewitt has 32 years’ experience in the community college system. He has a bachelor’s and master’s degree from San Diego State University.

Hewitt will receive his award at the 85th Annual 85th Annual American Association of Community Colleges Convention, April 9 -12, in Boston, MA.
