IVC Theatre presents “That Championship Season,” Oct. 22 – Nov. 7
October 1, 2004
Irvine Valley College presents Jason Miller’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama about five men who reunite to reminisce about their state basketball championship 20 years earlier, Oct. 22 – Nov. 7, Thu. - Sat., 8 p.m.; Sun. 2 p.m., at the Irvine Valley College Forum Theatre, 5500 Irvine Center Dr., Irvine. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors, $11 for general admission. The Forum Theatre is located in the B-300 Bldg.
Considered by many to be a quintessential American drama, the play depicts a truthful and damning—and sometimes humorous—look at racism through the eyes of long-time friends living in a small town. It follows the former high school basketball stars through the evening at their coach’s house, each man harboring some personal grief as a result of a tarnished basketball victory and questioning the American ethic that “winning is everything.” It first appeared on Broadway in 1972, winning both a Tony and a New York Drama Critics Award for best play.
The cast includes Duffy Lucas as the alcoholic Tom Daley, Scot Humphreys as the rueful school principal James Daley, Robert P. Purcell as Mayor George Sikowski, Paul Burt as the deceitful Phil Romano, and Jerry Newman as the bigoted and much-loved Coach.
