“Stepping Out" makes tap tops at IVC

The Irvine Valley College Department of Theatre presents “Stepping Out”, Richard Harris’s musical comedy about an eclectic group of amateur tap-dancers who find they have little in common and must learn to perform together, Friday, Mar. 12—Saturday Apr. 10 in the IVC Forum Theatre.

“Stepping Out” was first produced in London in 1984 and on Broadway in 1987. The film version starring Liza Minelli opened in 1996. Tap dancing is at the heart of this life-affirming tale of problem-plagued dancers—all women except for one lone male—who struggle to learn tap and are eventually transformed into a formidable dance troupe.

“You can be in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people, all trying to accomplish something totally out of your range—and for just one fleeting moment, find glory in the coming together to try,” says Brandee Williams Lara of the play, which she directs and choreographs.

Lara describes “Stepping Out” as an honest portrayal of everyday people who accept the best that they can do as success. But it is tap that drives this enlightening musical about growing old while staying young at heart.

The production features a multi-talented, all-student cast of 14 who deliver witty ensemble dialogue and dance numbers with the energy and élan of a seasoned professional dance group.

Tickets are available at $10 for students and seniors, $11 for general admission. Show times are Thursday—Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. The box office is open Wednesdays, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.; Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the box office or by calling (949) 451-5333.
