Department of Geology Offers Hawaiian Volcano Field Study, June
20 - 26.
IRVINE, CA Irvine Valley College is offering a geology field
class to study volcanoes on the big island of Hawaii during Summer
Semester 2003. The class will include daily excursions to study and
observe Kilauea, the worlds most continuously active volcano, and
Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes.
Field sessions will include the study of glacial features, active
lava flows, historic and prehistoric eruptions, and other evidence
including footprints purported to be from people trapped during an
eruption in 1790. The class will include hikes, with one near the
top of Mauna Kea at an elevation of 13,000 feet.
A $300 course fee covers accommodations at the Kilauea Military
Camp (KMC) and local transportation during the field trip. Students
must make their own travel arrangements to Hawaii and pay for their
own food and incidental expenses. Students may enroll online at
www.ivc.edu, by phone at (949) 582-4299, or in person at the Student
