Artist’s Opening Reception “On the Road”
WHO: Marilyn Harder, Mary Monge, Anthony Ross and Gerald Schwartz.
WHAT: Art exhibit: “On the Road”, September 16
– November 7, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., free to public and students.
WHEN: Thursday, September 19, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
WHERE: Irvine Valley College campus, the Art Gallery-B 112,
free parking in Lot 9 adjacent to the gallery.
WHY: Four artists whose depictions of California’s automobile
culture are motivated by their daily inspiration and contact with “the
road”. From the acerbic expressionism of artist Marilyn Harder’s
love-hate relationship with the automobile, to the photo-realistic, in-the-driver’s-seat
point of view of acrylic painter Anthony Ross, the exhibition illustrates scenes
both commonplace and surreal. Watercolorist Mary Monge captures the history
of California’s car culture with images of a past era that still lingers
in collective consciousness, while Gerald Schwartz’ big sky panoramic
views of fields alongside isolated highways are his statement of “what
if?”
