2011-12 Scholar Athlete Banquet held at IVC

The Irvine Valley athletic department held its annual scholar athlete banquet Thursday afternoon.Sally Kim and Fredy Razo

The college's 2011-12 scholar athletes were recognized, IVC's athletes of the year were honored and several other awards were also handed out at the luncheon.

Irvine Valley had a record 88 scholar athletes for 2011-12, according to Dean and Athletic Director Keith Shackleford.

IVC's team GPA award went to the 2012 women's tennis squad.

The Exchange Club Scholar Athletes of the Year were women's basketball player Melanie Kashanchi and men's volleyball player Kevin Ringuette.

Irvine Valley's Community Ambassador Scholarship winners were women's tennis player Corliss Mejia and men's basketball player Jordan Hamamoto.

The Athletics Alumnus of the Year Award went to former men's basketball player JC Timmons.

The Irvine Valley Coaches of the Year were Julie Hanks for women's basketball and Ki Yi for men's volleyball. Hanks led the women's basketball team to one of its better seasons, finished with 18 wins and made the playoffs. Yi saw his men's volleyball team get off to a rough start, but ended up helping guide the squad to another appearance in the state tournament.

Irvine Valley's athletes of the year were Sally Kim from women's golf and Fredy Razo from men's soccer.

Colin McCaughey, Keith Shackleford and Mark ZandonellaKim, a freshman, was the Orange Empire Conference player of the year last fall, led the Lasers to a conference title and finished 10th individually at the state tournament.

Razo, a sophomore, scored 18 goals and had five assists this past season. He broke the school record for goals in his two year career at IVC with 44. Razo was also named second team all-West Region as a freshman and first team all-region this past season.

Shackleford also handed out the annual Anna L. McFarlin Sport-For-All Service Awards to Colin McCaughey of Administration of Justice and Mark Zandonella, who is the Director of Parking Services. The award is given annually to two members of the IVC community and is presented to those who have provided meritorious service to the college's student-athletes.
