Irvine Valley's women's basketball team had a chance to finish in first place in the Orange Empire Conference.
Instead the Lasers have to settle for third. Irvine Valley got beat, 68-40, by Fullerton Friday night at Fullerton in the final game of the regular season.
Fullerton and Cypress ended up sharing the conference title with records of 10-2. Irvine Valley, which needed to beat Fullerton to tie with Cypress, ended up with a record of 9-3. Irvine Valley was 18-12 overall.
Fullerton took control of the game from the start, racing to a 8-1 lead. Irvine Valley scored just five points in the opening nine minutes and trailed, 19-5.
The Lasers shot just 21.4 percent (6 of 28) from the floor in the first half and trailed, 34-20. Fullerton also out-rebounded Irvine Valley, 28-19, in the opening 20 minutes.
For the game, Fullerton shot 40.4 percent (23 of 57), while Irvine Valley shot 24 percent (12 of 50). Fullerton out-rebounded Irvine Valley, 49-31, for the game. Irvine Valley also hurt itself with 25 turnovers. Fullerton had 16 steals.
Fullerton was led by Aunjanay Chambers, who had a game-high 26 points with 12 rebounds.
Irvine Valley got 16 points and six rebounds from sophomore forward Melanie Kashanchi and 11 points, seven assists and five rebounds from freshman point guard Amber Wharton.
No other player was in double figures for IVC, which had just five players score in the game.
Irvine Valley is expected to make the Southern California Regional Playoffs, which start next week. Brackets come out Monday afternoon.
